About this supplier

The Vegan Chef is a South African plant‑based food brand known for gourmet, cruelty‑free comfort food. Operating as both a food chain and a manufacturer, the business brings accessible, flavour‑forward vegan cuisine to tables across Gauteng and Durban, with outlets in Sandton, a Midrand dark kitchen, and Umhlanga. Alongside in‑store dining and takeaway, the website features a Catering Menu, making it easy to serve their signature dishes to groups.

What sets The Vegan Chef apart is its vertically integrated model. The team sources ingredients, develops recipes, produces core components at its plant‑based facility, and serves the final dishes through its own outlets and partners. This approach helps maintain quality, freshness and taste consistency across everything they prepare, which is particularly valuable when supplying food for larger groups or multiple service points at the same time.

Their comfort‑food style translates into event‑friendly favourites in a fully plant‑based format. Signature items cited by the brand include Southern Fried Chickn, Sticky Ribs and Crispy Battered Vish with slaw, alongside a wide selection of frozen convenience meals and meat‑free products. The online shop showcases options such as Battered Vish made for the oven, plant‑based pies, samoosas, Sticky Ribs, and sauces like TVC 1000 Island. There is also a baked convenience range with treats including classic choc lamingtons, cupcakes and brownies available in select regions, plus seasonal and special ranges highlighted from time to time.

As a manufacturer, The Vegan Chef produces the majority of its menu items in‑house, as well as an array of meat‑free products and a frozen convenience range that can be purchased in store, online, or via selected retail partners. This scale makes it easier to plan for groups and maintain menu continuity across multiple venues or service dates. The brand notes that, as far as possible, it sources raw materials locally and invests in training and chef development within its teams.

Recognition for their approach includes accolades from LUXlife’s Global Vegan Awards. The Vegan Chef s named Best Vegan Food Chain in South Africa, and its Vegan Southern Fried Chicken received a Culinary Excellence Award. These awards underscore the brand’s focus on flavour and consistency, which translates well to plated service, buffet selections or shared items that need to hold quality over the course of an event.

From its beginnings as a small food cart in Sandton to opening what it describes as South Africa’s first vegan dark kitchen in Midrand, The Vegan Chef has grown its footprint while keeping customer experience central. Today, guests can dine in or reserve a table at their outlets, order online for at‑home preparation, or find selected products through retail partners. For functions and gatherings, the presence of a dedicated Catering Menu sits alongside this broader ecosystem, giving hosts access to the same gourmet comfort dishes their regulars enjoy.

Areas served include Gauteng and Durban, with hubs in Sandton, Midrand and Umhlanga. Beyond these centres, partnerships with other restaurants and food chains extend the reach of The Vegan Chef’s plant‑based comfort food to more locations across South Africa. Whether supplying ready‑to‑serve favourites for a casual spread or scaling up consistent hero dishes across multiple service points, the brand’s combination of manufacturing capability and retail presence supports a flexible catering solution.

With an ethos rooted in sustainability, local sourcing where possible and skills development, The Vegan Chef pairs a modern, socially conscious approach with familiar, crowd‑pleasing flavours. For plant‑based catering that balances comfort, quality and consistency, it offers a comprehensive platform built for both everyday dining and group occasions.

Even though the restaurant seems quite small at first glance with few seats, the cuisine is definitely top notch 👍. Especially for people who like added value in the form of vegetables on their plate, there are definitely good options there, which I tried. The Buddha Bowl is a really good mix of vegetables, but also chickpeas and fried seitan pieces. I've tried two dishes so far, which I've added photos of, and I'll definitely be visiting the restaurant at least once or twice more during my holiday. Since I order two menus at a time, I won't be able to try everything on the menu during my holiday, unfortunately 😄 Of course, I've also read the other reviews and that some people have had very bad experiences, which I can't understand and can't comment on because I ate directly in the restaurant and didn't order the food to take home. On my next visit, I will ask the lady there what this incident s all about, but I can definitely say that my food s 100% fine. I can only keep my fingers crossed for the two ladies who are part of the restaurant team and hope that they get many more guests in the future, which they really deserve! (Even if there may have been one or two mistakes in the past, which I cannot know about ) I hope that this English, which s translated by Google, correctly expresses what I nted to say.

This is my second time ordering from here after getting ripped off for the chicken and chips bucket deal on Uber eats (small cup ≠ bucket), and let me l you it's the last, I ordered a value meal and the ribs chops thing both for their pricing extremely small portions undercooked chicken pops, overly sweet ribs, chips were stale, what's going?? on I paid R330 via Uber eats for a Sunday afternoon just to have to ke up and cook because this food s so hopeless 😭.
Lack of seasoning and small portions, staleish sides and incorrect flavours really make this a hard NO from me, apologies.

It’s lovely to have a dedicated vegan spot to go to however I do wish the atmosphere s thought of a little more; considering its location in the heart of umhlanga. Food s great. The fried chicken s lovely but s too oily for my liking. Chips seasoning needs some work. . The carrot cake ffle s great. I would recommend using something other then a coconut based ice cream as it does over power the taste.
The tropical smoothie shake s not what I had thought and tasted very synthetic. I do believe this place is a gem for vegans in dbn

I am disappointed to say that the food here s quite poor. Ordered 2 Buddha bowls with vegan chicken, large fries and a smoothie.
Took 40+ mins to arrive with the bowls. The "chicken" tasted like wet soggy bread. I think they try to make their own seitan, but very very poorly. Still no drinks.
When the "smoothie" arrived, it s a tered down juice.
The fries were a tiny portion and tasted of oil.
I'm really disappointed as I believe this place has won a bunch of awards.

I do not recommend this place at all. I visited when they newly opened and decided to try it while I s in Durban again but it utterly disappointed from sit down to ordering to the food itself. There's a few tables outside the store but doesn't get much attention. U need to order at the entrance. I had a falafel wrap with 3 tiny falafel balls and a whole lot of lettuce. The chips s air fried. There is no sauce unless u paid an extra R35. The drinks all had a price on the menu but an extra R10 is charged for the almond milk. Why did I come to a vegan restaurant if you going to charge me extra for the vegan option!!!!!

The ambience of this place is amazing.
Sitting outside enjoying that fresh sea breeze, sipping your cappuccino which is perfectly brewed with the most beautiful view of the ocean.
The perfect hosts who are always checking on you ensuring you're taken care of...
The itress is super attentive, she made some really fantastic suggestions.
The food s delicious, that chicken and mayo sandwich s perfectly seasoned and well toasted.
Omg...if you're a chocolate fanatic, you have to try the chocolate ffle, its absolutely incredible
Not forgetting the cakes...so soft and light...its a must!
Well done to the team at Vegan Chef Umhlanga, you have set incredibly high standards.
I am definitely visiting soon to try out the rest of the menu :)

I recently ordered the Southern Fried “Chicken” with a portion of chips from The Vegan Chef Durban North and s deeply disappointed. The chips were old, dry, and came in the smallest portion I have ever seen. The crumb southern batter s bland , just salty with no real flavour. The burger s even worse: dense, flavorless, and topped with a piece of dry, wilted lettuce that s unappetizing. The bread bun tasted old as well.
Honestly, there are several vegan spots with strong community support, especially during fasting months. This place seemed like it s aiming for a different flavour palette, but I suggest the owner or head chef take some time out , heck take a road trip : visit places like Scheckter’s RAW in Sea Point or Plant in Camps Bay.
Their large variety of vegan dishes truly inspire and satisfy.
I had high hopes but s met with a terrible meal that felt like a ste of money especially given the current economy.
Please come back with something we can rave about, not something that earns TERRIBLE reviews.
Come on, you can do so much better!
