Urban Strings

Urban Strings is an event music collective specialising in electro-acoustic string performances, instrumental entertainment and music coordination for weddings, corporate functions, private parties and other special occasions. Available in Johannesburg and Cape Town, with musicians based in Gauteng and the Western Cape, the collective offers a professional live music option with seamless national reach for events across South Africa.

Officially established in 2015, Urban Strings is described as South Africa’s first multi-instrumental collective and is made up of more than 14 talented, diverse musicians from across the country. The collective is fronted by vocalist, violinist and multi-disciplinary creative Larah Eksteen, and showcases a curated pool of professional electric and acoustic string musicians. Its members include vocalists, violinists, viola players, cellists, double bassists, harpists, pianists and guitarists, allowing each act to be shaped around the style and requirements of the event.

A key strength of Urban Strings is versatility. Their musicians can be mixed and matched to create anything from an intimate solo performance to a traditional string quartet, with options for acoustic elegance, contemporary electric strings and broader instrumental combinations. The team provides detailed quotes based on each event’s individual requirements, along with biographies, repertoire, technical riders and sound bytes to help clients choose the right fit.

For weddings, Urban Strings’ artists have been entertaining couples and guests since 2003, performing at well-known venues nationwide including Boschendal, Tintswalo Atlantic, Blaauwklippen, Cellars-Hohenort, Rickety Bridge, Vrede & Lust, Cavalli, Memoire, Shepstone Gardens, Ground Venue, The Forum, Oakfield Farm and Inimitable. Their extensive repertoire is designed to suit the atmosphere of each wedding, from ceremony music and elegant canapés to romantic background performances and memorable celebratory moments.
