We visited Phansi museum in January 2025. It’s a beautiful place and provides a wonderful experience for learning more about Zulu and other Southern African tribes cultures. There are lots of artifacts and curious things to look at and touch, but what made Phansi exceptional s our guide! She made the visit real - dancing to some drummers beat, recounting her personal experience of the difficult times when moving from rural life to become a city dweller as a child, and explaining the roles of women.
This is a worthwhile visit that will occupy approximately 1 hour of your day in the Berea area of Durban.

Lovely museum with a great curio shop. Make sure to get the guided tour for R100, it is very in-depth and takes about 90 minutes. The guides are local artists in residence and are extremely knowledgeable. Gated free parking available.

What an incredible treasure trove of a place. One of the finest collections of African artifacts, Zulu, Ndebele etc from late 1800’s until today. Not sure anything like this exists anywhere else on the world. Painstakingly compiled over a lifetime by the founder. A must visit for anyone with an interest in Southern African art, craft and culture.

This important collection of historical and modern artefacts has been carefully curated to offer visual representations of indigenous South African cultures. Please support them! Would hate to see this special place lost to the public due to a lack of funding.

Beautiful museum with country wide collection of traditional clothes, items and artwork. Curators are highly knowledgeable and friendly. The museum has a shop that sells local literature, jewelry and other traditional items.

The Phansi Museum is a must stop for all Durban tourists and first time locals. It is an amazing collection of Zulu and other African cultural artifacts with even more amazing guides. We learned so much about traditional African fashion and life. We absolutely loved it, would visit again next time we are here.

The collection of artwork and beadwork s stunning. I highly recommend visiting this museum and gift shop. Next Time I am In Durban I will stop by the Phansi Museum.

This is an absolute must-see in Durban. Such an impressive collection of art, clothing, and artifacts from Zululand and all over South Africa. We had a wonderful guide to show us around and teach us about everything there. It completely exceeded expectations, everyone go visit!

Amazing place to see and touch African culture. Got told about different traditions, marital customs, everyday life of different African nations. Very cozy and openhearted place and people.
